LAM museum acquires Sprinkle Carpet by artist collective We Make Carpets

The LAM museum has acquired Sprinkle Carpet, a unique installation by the artist collective We Make Carpets. Composed of brightly coloured sprinkles arranged in a decorative pattern, the artwork is remarkably delicate.

ordinary

food sprinkles?

Even the slightest movement could transform this artwork into nothing more than a pile of ordinary food sprinkles, commonly used as a topping for breakfast sandwiches in the Netherlands. The acquisition will be on display from 16 April 2025 at the LAM museum on the Keukenhof Estate in Lisse as part of its visual arts exhibition exploring the theme of breakfast.

From Peanut-Butter Platform

to Sprinkle Carpet

Though much smaller in scale, We Make Carpets’ Sprinkle Carpet calls to mind Wim T Schippers’ controversial Peanut-Butter Platform. However, there’s a significant difference: while Schippers aimed to shake visitors up in the late 1960s, We Make Carpets seeks to inspire wonder for the everyday.

Everyday

beauty

All of We Make Carpets’ installations feature overwhelming, decorative patterns when viewed from afar. Upon closer inspection, visitors can see that they are made of everyday materials that are rarely, if ever, given such careful attention. The collective explains, “We want to encourage people to look at mass-produced, everyday objects in a new light and to appreciate their beauty. You don’t buy sprinkles because they are pretty, but they are.”

Unique

Pattern

The LAM museum’s acquisition dates back to 2013. This will be the first time in 12 years that the piece will be on display, and on this occasion, it will feature a fresh pattern. For We Make Carpets, each design is only ever used once. Every time the installation is displayed, the sprinkles are meticulously arranged in a new pattern, piece by piece. The artwork will be installed by one of the artists from We Make Carpets the first three times it is displayed at the LAM. After that, the museum will receive detailed specifications to create future installations of Sprinkle Carpet.

Essence

of We Make Carpets

We Make Carpets is thrilled with the sale and says, “The LAM museum acquiring Sprinkle Carpet means a lot to us. We created this installation early in our career as a collective. Since then, our pieces have evolved to become larger and more complex. Sprinkle Carpet captures the essence of our work — an exploration of form and colour using an everyday material tailored to a specific location.”

A Dutch

artist collective

The Dutch artist collective We Make Carpets consists of Bob Waardenburg, Marcia Nolte and Stijn van der Vleuten. Since 2009, the trio has been creating installations from everyday objects and materials such as pasta, mustard seeds, scouring pads and skewers. Their artworks, ranging from towering installations to delicate designs, have been exhibited in museums worldwide, from Australia to the United States. Sprinkle Carpet at the LAM museum measures just 21 x 14 cm. Despite its small size, the process of creating the artwork is intense. “The large pieces are challenging, but the small ones perhaps even more so. You feel the tension in your whole body”, explains Marcia Nolte.

Breakfast

with We Make Carpets

The acquisition from We Make Carpets will be displayed from Wednesday, 16 April 2025 as part of the LAM museum’s breakfast-themed exhibition. It will be showcased alongside works by Martin Parr, Elspeth Diederix, Ana Navas, Rafaël Rozendaal, Jennifer Levonian, Navid Nuur, Magali Reus, Renzo Martens, Alicia Framis, Ron Mueck and Alexandre Lavet.

What’s there

to see?

The LAM museum’s collection includes 3D images, art installations, paintings, sound art and digital art. That sounds like a lot (it is!). But there’s method in the madness: each work focuses on food, drink or shopping. Did we mention the LAM museum has the world’s largest collection of food art?

Some visitors say it’s the best work of art at the LAM museum. Designed by Arie Korbee, the raised museum looks right at home in the canopy.

Spent a joyful morning with my grandsons, 14,11 and 8 years, in your museum. Very much liked the idea of the “kijkcoaches”, this added an extra dimension to our visit. All of the staff were very kind and helpful.

Zie popcorn zelfportret in foto’s

This must be one of the most exciting museums the Netherlands has to offer. The staff is very kind, helpful and asking very thoughtful questions to guide people in their journey through the museum. The location is beautiful, although a bit tough to reach if you don't go by car in the off season (in spring there are special Keukenhof shuttle buses).

We visited more than 30 museums in Netherlands so far and this one is absolute gem. My kids loved the sticker game and they talked to every employee they met. We where in the museum for more than 2 hours!!

Very neat little museum where all (modern) art revolves around food. The display is very well thought out and each work of art adds to the experience from discarded pieces of bubble gum to the Grand Bacchanal.

The LAM Museum is a beautifully designed small museum with a unique and thoughtfully curated collection of modern art, all centered around the theme of food. The staff is welcoming and well-informed, happy to answer any questions about the works on display. The museum is located on the picturesque Kasteel Keukenhof estate, making it a pleasure to visit both for the art and the setting. Parking is convenient, and it’s an easy walk from the Keukenhof gardens (during the season). A visit to the LAM is highly worthwhile.

What a surprise! And such wonderful, friendly hosts with whom you can have a wonderful conversation about art and who are really interested in you and have time for you! Recommended, we will definitely go for a mini holiday again (also for the building and the surrounding area: highly recommended).

Heerlijke middag gehad in Lisse.

Makkelijk en gratis parkeren. Schone toiletten. Kluisjes. Vooraf tijdslot reserveren is wel handig.

LAM is a beautiful museum with a wonderful, modern art collection around the theme of food. The approach of the "spectator coaches" is great, you learn a lot more than usual, and you have to ask the right questions. The visit to LAM takes a good hour and if you add the sculpture garden two hours. We came with a group of 22 and we were split into three groups (maximum of 10 people can enter at a time). Everyone enjoyed it and the rest of the day we kept on talking about what we had seen.

Geweldig leuk museum!

Great museum, very friendly and helpful staff. The current expo themed around food showing all sorts of weird and wonderful items, and being able to sample some of the icecream afterwards was a treat.
Set in the beautiful location of Keukenhof Castle, you can go for a walk around the gardens while you are there. I will definitely visit again.

We hadden inspirerende gesprekken over kunst.

Very unique museum ? based on consumerism. Each artwork is amazing and worth thinking of ?

Awesome museum! It starts with the beautifully architecture of the building, but then the central theme of food & consumption, the very visually appealing art and the whole concept of "just walk around and have a chat with us, or we with you" instead of endless signs turns this into an experience that myself and my 4 year old son absolutely loved!

Very interesting art. A mixed collection with something to everybody’s liking. I love the way there are no signs and you have to connect with the museum staff if you want to know more about the art. Like with the artwork, you connect easier with some than others, so also on a social level very interesting. A place for everybody!
